Italian Cheesesteak Sandwiches are one of the best cheesesteaks you’ll bite into. Filled to the brim with quality shaved steak, roasted red peppers, grilled onions, fresh Mozzarella cheese, red sauce, and parsley. This flavorful recipe is going to be a family favorite for years to come.
Italian Cheesesteak Sandwiches is a recipe I used to make for the kids out of simple leftovers and staple items in our house. The formula is simple and straightforward and will have you out of the kitchen in no time! It’s a winning recipe for any occasion, a simple dinner, lunch, even potlucks, and backyard gatherings.
Keep in mind this is not a Philly Cheesesteak, not even close. It’s better tasting, in my opinion, and I love chowing down on a REAL Philly Cheesesteak when visiting the Philly area. Many great Philly restaurants are serving them, but my favorite two and Pat’s and Geno’s. They are the real original deal.
Have you ever had the pleasure of having an authentic Philly Cheesesteak? If so, I can’t wait for you to try these fantastic Italian Cheesesteak Sandwichs!
Let’s talk a little about the ingredients for the Italian Cheesesteak Sandwiches. They are straightforward to locate, and most you will have on hand in your refrigerator and pantry if not all components can be found at a local supermarket in a snap.

Italian Deli Rolls- Opt for Italian Deli rolls from the bakery market or a local bakery. Do not use deli rolls from the bread section at the market as the texture and taste are apples and oranges.
Olive oil– Use quality authentic olive oil versus vegetable oil, corn, oil peanut oil, or any other oils to cook your shaved steak and grilled onions.
Pasta Sauce or Pizza sauce – I use a simple homemade pasta sauce of my grandmother’s. I have also used a great homemade pizza sauce from my friend Christina’s blog. If you are in a bind and need to use a high-quality organic pasta sauce, that is ok.
Shaved Sirloin Steak– You can find this at most markets. If you do not see it in the meat section, ask the staff at the meat counter they will be happy to assist you. Please do not use the overprocessed brand Steak-umm Sliced Steak to make these Italian Cheesesteak Sandwiches. Trust me. You’ll thank me for that tip.
Grilled onions – Use yellow onions for the grilled onions. They have a better flavor for this recipe. Onions matter.
Roasted Red Peppers – I have been known to make my roasted peppers for my Italian Cheesesteak Sandwiches. Still, in all honesty, it’s just easier to use excellent quality organic roasted peppers and save some time. I prefer the jarred organic roasted peppers over the tinned brands.
Fresh Mozzarella cheese – This step is and should not be substituted with shredded mozzarella cheese or sliced mozzarella cheese. The taste and texture of fresh sliced Mozzarella are just so much more pleasing on this Cheesesteak sandwich.
Fresh Parsley – Use fresh parsley not dried as the flavor is much more enticing, and only add the fresh parsley at the very end before serving the Italian cheesesteak sandwiches
