I think it’s fairly safe to say many Americans love their BBQ sauces, I really don’t think I have met one person in my years that didn’t love BBQ Sauce. Now some have their favorite style of BBQ Sauce; I’m more of a Kansas City Style BBQ sauce junkie, man I do love a thick, sweet, dark, slightly spicy flavor to my sauces.
My husband, however, is more of the Carolina Mustard base guy, My mom being born and raised in Tennessee is the Memphis style gal, and I even have a brother that thinks the Alabama White is the best since he lives there, can you imagine that?

- Kansas City – Thick, reddish-brown, tomato or ketchup-based with sugars, vinegar, and spices. It is thick and sweet and does not penetrate the meat as much as sit on the surface. This is the most common and popular sauce in the US.
- East Carolina Sauce – made with vinegar, ground black pepper, and hot chili pepper flakes. It is used as a “mopping” sauce to baste the meat while it was cooking and as a dipping sauce when it is served. Thin and sharp, inconsistency to cut into the meats. Often, there will be no sugar in the sauce or only trace amounts in East Carolina BBQ Sauce
- Western Carolina Dip or Piedmont Dip – in the “Piedmont” hilly areas of western North Carolina, the sauce is often called a dip. It is a lot like the East Carolina Sauce with tomato paste, tomato sauce, or ketchup added. The vinegar softens the tomato.
- South Carolina Mustard Sauce – Part of South Carolina is known for its yellow barbecue sauces made primarily of yellow mustard, vinegar, sugar, and spices. This sauce is most common in a belt from Columbia to Charleston, an area settled by many Germans.
- Memphis – Similar to the Kansas City style, mainly having the same ingredients, yet having a larger amount of vinegar and often molasses is used as a sweetener.
- Florida – Similar to the Memphis style because it has a higher percentage of vinegar than Kansas City style. Florida style is characterized by tropical fruit flavors such as orange, mango, guava, papaya, pineapple, and tamarind as well as peppers with a touch of heat such as chipotle and Habanero.
- Texas – In some of the older, more traditional restaurants the sauces are heavily seasoned with cumin, chili peppers, bell peppers, chili powder or ancho powder, lots of black pepper, fresh onion, only a touch of tomato, little or no sugar, and they often contain meat drippings and smoke flavor because meats are dipped into them. They are medium thick and often resemble a thin tomato soup.
- Alabama White Sauce – North Alabama is known for its distinctive white sauce, a mayonnaise-based sauce, which is used predominantly on chicken and pork. It is composed of mayonnaise, vinegar, sugar, salt, and black pepper.

Below you will find my all time favorite Homemade Sweet BBQ sauce recipe with easy to find ingredients and simple to follow instructions on how to make your own Summer Memories on your grill this year with family and friends.
Ingredients needed for Homemade Sweet BBQ Sauce
- 2 and 1/2 tablespoons of chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon of Hungarian paprika
- 1 teaspoon of kosher salt
- The zest of 1 orange
- 2 and 1/4 cups quality ketchup
- 1/4 cup of brown spicy mustard
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
- The juice of 4 fresh lemons
- 1/4 of a cup A-1 steak sauce
- 1/3 of a cup dark blackstrap molasses
- 1/2 of a cup of natural honey
- 2 teaspoons of hot sauce
- 1 cup of brown sugar lightly packed
- 3 tablespoons of authentic olive oil
- 1 medium onion diced
- 5 cloves of garlic minced
- 2 1/2 tablespoons Chili powder
- 1 tablespoon Fresh orange zest
- 1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon Hungarian paprika
- 1 teaspoon Kosher salt
- 2 1/4 cups Organic ketchup
- 1/4 cup Spicy brown mustard
- 1/2 cup Apple cider vinegar
- 1/2 cup Natural honey
- 1/3 cup Dark black-strap molasses
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 cup A-1 steak sauce
- 4 Lemons juice of
- 2 teaspoons Hot sauce
- 1 cup Light brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons Olive oil
- 1 medium Onion diced
- 5 cloves Minced garlic
In a glass bowl, combine the chili powder, Hungarian paprika, fresh ground black pepper, kosher salt, and the zest of 1 orange.
In a large bowl, mix the ketchup, spicy brown mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, freshly squeezed lemon juice, A-1 steak sauce, blackstrap molasses, natural honey, hot sauce, and lightly packed brown sugar.
Over medium heat, warm the authentic olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the minced onions and sauté them until translucent, about 5-6 minutes. Press the garlic cloves, add it to the onion and cook for another minute.
Add spices from the small bowl to pan, then add all the wet ingredients
Simmer over low heat for 20-25 minutes uncovered.
Place in refrigerator overnight to let flavors come through.
