Southern Tomato Pie with Bacon is a tradition in the South, much like Sweet Tea. Most Southern Tomato Pie recipes will be similar to a slight variance depending on your family’s tradition and background. It usually consists of Heirloom tomatoes, your favorite cheese, mayonnaise, and fresh herbed in a homemade pie crust.
If you aren’t from the Southern States or have family down South, you might be scratching your head now. You might even be wondering aloud, What is a Tomato Pie, and did she say mayonnaise?
I know some of you may be thinking it’s an odd idea to make a pie from Tomatoes, Cheese, and mayonnaise after one bite. I bet you feel a little differently about the idea. I can tell you I have been a firm believer in the combination since I was a small child.
What does it taste like? My first response is Mmm Delicious! It’s a Savory combination that has a hint of sweetness from the vine-ripened Heirloom Tomatoes with an amazing gooey cheesy flavor and crisp bacon that will have you smacking your lips together in amazement.
Many similar recipes on the web, all slightly varying from blogger to blogger, look fantastic. One Tomato Pie Recipe that I really like and enjoy making this tomato season is Tomato Pie by Simply Recipes Blog. The recipe was passed down from a close friend of hers years ago while on vacation. I would almost lay 10 to 1. It’s one of her most cherished recipes to date.

Basil and Butter Homemade Pie Crust
-
1 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
-
2 tablespoons fresh Basil, chopped
-
1/2 cup butter unsalted diced and chilled
-
3 tablespoons of ice water
-
extra all-purpose flour

Preheat oven to 450 degrees

Add the cold diced butter and pulse about 4x or until it resembles coarse crumbs. Add 3 tablespoons of ice water and pulse a few times or pulse until the dough forms a ball. If you find your pie dough mixture is a little dry, you can add another tablespoon of water. If needed, you can cut the butter by using a pastry cutter. Work in one tablespoon of butter at a time.
-
Press the homemade dough ball onto a floured surface and turn in flour, then roll to a 1/4″ of an inch thickness. Be sure to turn and rotate the Homemade pie dough as you do not stick to the surface. Roll out the dough to a few inches larger than your pie plate.

Place in the pie plate and press the edges to fit—Tuck under any edges that overhang and crimp. Be sure to prick holes in the crust so that while baking, it does not shrink. Brush lightly with olive oil. If needed, you may place it back in the refrigerator covered with plastic wrap till ready to use. 1 pie crust recipe will fit comfortably in a 9″ pie plate.
-
Place in the preheated oven at 400 degrees for 7 minutes.
